As part of the Economic Stimulus plan, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 modifies and extends federal tax credits for “qualified energy efficient improvements” which include windows, doors and skylights. Federal Tax Credits For Qualifying Energy Efficient Improvements
Owners of existing homes receive up to 30% of the cost of upgrading the efficiency of their home
(up to $1,500).
Improvements eligible for the tax credit:
- Insulation materials and systems to reduce heat loss or gain
- Doors, windows and skylights
- Pigmented metal roofs and asphalt roofs
- Heating, cooling and water-heating equipment installation
Michigan Tax Credits And Incentives
Michigan taxpayers are eligible for a tax credit for the purchase and installation of qualifying energy
efficient home improvements (single filer income of $37,500 or less and married filers with income
of $75,000 or less).
MichCon offers its residential gas customers rebates to improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
- The Residential Energy Audit Rebate Incentive Program offers a $250 rebate to homeowners who have
an energy audit performed on their home and complete at least one of the recommended measures
from the audit.
- The Residential High-Efficiency Natural Gas Furnace Rebate Program provides a $250 rebate for homeowners
who replace their old furnaces with a more efficient natural gas furnace.
DTE offers discounts on their Energy Audit programs, which provide lists of energy efficiency technologies
that are eligible for up to $1500 in rebates. The
rebate chart indicates how much of the incentives
require a pre-installation audit.
Incentive amounts:
- Air Sealing: $50-$150
- Floor Insulation: $25-$125
- Wall Insulation: $100-$350

Consumers Energy Residential HVAC and Water Heating Incentive Program covers products purchased
and installed on or after July 27, 2009. Funds are available on a first come, first served basis through
December 31.
Customers must install equipment in the Consumers Energy service area and receive gas or electric
service from Consumers Energy.
Incentive Amounts:
- Central AC: $100-$350
- Heat Pumps: $100-$350
- Furnace: $200-350

Federal Tax Credits For Qualifying Energy Efficient Improvements
Maximum deduction - $1.80 per square foot = 50% reduction in total annual energy and power costs
(compared to a reference building that meets the minimum requirements of ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001);
not to exceed the amount equal to the cost of energy efficient commercial property placed in service
during the taxable year.
Partial deduction - $.60 per square foot = 16 2/3% reduction for building envelope, HVAC and
service hot water systems and lighting
Partial deduction (interim lighting) - $.30 - .60 per square foot = 25 – 40% reduction in lighting power
density (50% in the case of warehouses) Must reduce total annual energy costs by 50%, but partial
deductions are allowed.
Michigan Tax Credits And Incentives
DTE Energy’s Commercial Your Energy Savings Program provides prescriptive and custom incentives
based on the estimated annual energy savings.
Incentive amounts:
- CFL Lamps: $1.50-$5.00
- Programmable Thermostat: $20
- Insulated Ducts: $15-$40/ft
- Tankless Water Heater: $150

Consumers Energy Business Solutions Program provides incentives for customers who upgrade
their facility with energy efficiency equipment.
Incentive amounts:
- CFL Lamps: $1.50-$4.00
- Inefficient Lamp Removal: $4-$10
- AC/Heat Pump Systems: $26-$40 per ton
- Steam Trap Replacement: $50
